Explore the marvels of Vidarbha, with a tour to Chikhaldara and the Melghat wildlife sanctuary. Located about 100 km, north of Amravati, Chikhaldara stands at a height of 3,570 feet above sea level. Chikhaldara is surrounded on three sides by the borders of the Melghat Project Tiger Area which is spread over an area of about 1,676 square kilometres.

Chikhaldara has great historical references. It is said that Bhima, the second-eldest and strongest among the Pandava brothers in the legendary epic Mahabharata, killed King Kichaka in this area and threw his body into the valley. The valley is now known as Kichakdara and the water reservoir in which Bhima washed his hands is called the Bhimkund. The famous fort of Gawilgad is also in the vicinity.

The Melghat tiger reserve consists of over 70 tigers, almost the same number of leopards, about 200 sloth bears, 1,800 Indian gaurs and hundreds of herbivore animals like cheetal, sambar, barking deer, wildboar, choushinga, etc.The reserve also has rare animals like the flying squirrel, pangolin, mouse deer, ratel and honey badger. Secretive animals like wildcats, caracal and hyena can also be spotted in this area along with mammals like jackals, wild dogs, porcupines, a variety of mongoose, squirrels, shrews and other rodents.More than 350 species of birds can also be seen here.

A visit to the noteworthy social activities in the tribal region of Melghat is the highlight of this tour. The Sampoorna Bamboo Kendra at Lawada was initiated by Sunil and Nirupama Deshpande to help the bamboo artisans acquire a respectable place in the society and give them employment opportunities. Similarly the activities carried out by Dr. Ashish Satav and Kavita Satav of 'Mahan trust' for tribal people in the region of Melghat to overcome various health issues and infant mortality problems. The work of these social workers has helped the local population live a better life. Visit to these places always proves very inspiring and makes one salute these saints of the modern world.
